Places to eat

Chapel hill is a fantastic college town with a great social scene.  Franklin Street is well known as the place to eat, drink, and be merry.  The best part is that both the church and The Carolina Inn are only about a block away from Franklin street.  Here’s a list of some of the best places to eat:

1. Top of the Hill (www.topofthehillrestaurant.com)

Affectionately known by the locals as “Top-O”, Top of the Hill is one of the most recognized and beloved restaurants in Chapel Hill.  It was originally created to prevent a national chain restaurant from dominating downtown Chapel Hill and today, has become the premier destination restaurant and social crossroads of Chapel Hill.  It’s a mingling place for graduate students, faculty, town residents, tourists, undergraduates and anyone lucky enough to find themselves in the southern part of heaven.  Apart from the delicious food, Top-O has won 18 medals in the World Beer Championships and has been recognized in the World Encyclopedia of Beer as one of the best breweries in the US! Definitely a “must-try” establishment.

2. Spanky’s (www.spankysrestaurant.com)

Spanky’s Restaurant and Bar is one of Franklin street’s most famous landmarks.  Located on the corner of Franklin st. and Columbia st., this restaurant has been a Chapel Hill institution since 1977.  The menu boasts of wonderful, All-American foods such as, hamburgers, brown sugar baby back ribs, and good old North Carolina BBQ! The bar is a favorite late night destination for local citizens and UNC students. This restaurant is highly recommended by Chapel Hill visitors and residents.

3. 411 West Italian Cafe (www.411west.com)

If you’re in the mood to taste a more international cuisine, 411 West is the first place we recommend.  This Italian restaurant is inspired by the flavors of Italy and the Mediterranean, while simultaneously incorporating a healthy California twist. Their freshly made pasta is absolutely delicious and their thin crust pizzas are baked in an imported wood-fired pizza oven. This restaurant is best known for their creative pastas, fresh seafood and steaks, and seasonal specials inspired by products from local farms. 411 West provides a romantic dining experience for both young and old alike.

4. Crook’s Corner (www.crookscorner.com)

Crook’s Corner is THE place for good, old-fashioned, Southern cuisine! Quoted by The New York Times as “sacred ground for Southern foodies”, their menu offers everything from Carolina fish fry and soft shell crabs to grilled shoulder tenderloin steaks and barbecue St. Louis ribs. In addition to the great food, the restaurant doubles as an art gallery, featuring exhibits from local Carolina artists each month! We’re all about supporting the arts, so go check it out!
